Has Any Team Ever Gone 38-0-0?
The short answer: no. Here is the full breakdown of every team that came close, across every major European league.
The short answer
No team in the history of 20-team top-flight football has ever won all 38 league matches in a single season. The 38-0-0 record does not exist in the real world — which is exactly why it is the premise of this game.
But several legendary teams came agonisingly close. Below is every squad that reached at least 30 wins in a 38-match campaign, ranked by how few points they dropped.
The closest real-world campaigns
| Team | Season | Record | Pts | Dropped |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Juventus 🇮🇹 | 2011-12 | 23-15-0 | 102* | 15 |
| Man City 🏴 | 2017-18 | 32-4-2 | 100 | 14 |
| Man City 🏴 | 2018-19 | 32-2-4 | 98 | 12 |
| Liverpool 🏴 | 2019-20 | 32-3-3 | 99 | 12 |
| Arsenal 🏴 | 2003-04 | 26-12-0 | 90 | 24 |
| Real Madrid 🇪🇸 | 2011-12 | 32-4-2 | 100 | 14 |
| Barcelona 🇪🇸 | 2012-13 | 32-4-2 | 100 | 14 |
| Barcelona 🇪🇸 | 2009-10 | 31-6-1 | 99 | 8 |
| PSG 🇫🇷 | 2015-16 | 30-6-2 | 96 | 12 |
| Celtic 🏴 | 2016-17 | 106 pts (38 games) | 106 | 8 |
* Juventus 2011-12 played only 38 games but had 15 draws in Conte's unbeaten season — 23 wins, not 38.
Why 38-0-0 is (almost) impossible
Modern football has too much variance for a perfect record. Even the greatest squads lose or draw to bottom-half teams because of injuries, fatigue, referee decisions, and pure luck. A Poisson expected-goals model shows why: if a team has a 75% win probability per match (an elite estimate), the chance of winning all 38 is 0.75^38 = 0.00005 — roughly one in twenty thousand.
That is why, in over 130 years of league football across England, Italy, Spain, Germany and France, no team has ever done it. The closest is Man City 2017-18 and 2018-19, who won 32 of 38 matches in consecutive seasons. Arsenal's Invincibles went unbeaten in 2003-04 — but won only 26, drawing 12.
Can you do it in the game?
In the 38-0-0 draft game, the simulation engine runs the same statistical model that makes real football unpredictable. Our internal testing across 5,000 simulated seasons shows that even with a stacked all-time XI at Normal difficulty, a perfect 38-0-0 record occurs only 1.9% of the time. On Nightmare difficulty, it never happened in 5,000 runs.
So if you manage it, you have achieved something that no real football team ever has — and something that is statistically rarer than winning the treble.
Think you can go 38-0-0? Prove it.
